How To Know When to Move On To A New Job

April 17, 2018

No one wants to hate their job. Many career coaches claim that if you do what you love, it won’t feel like work at all. But what if you truly loathe your job? You still need a paycheck. Is happiness worth throwing a good paying job away?

Quit If…

Your health is being negatively affected by your job. Chronic stress, like from a job you hate, can lead to serious health issues. No job is worth that.

Your marriage is breaking up over it. If your job is making you so miserable that you’re bringing your bad moods home and taking things out on your family, it’s time to take a hard look at the source.

Your work is not valued. Not being valued at work is more common than you might think. If you’re the office scapegoat, or not being appreciated for your work contribution, it’s time to pack up and find someplace where your work will be valued, and where you can advance your career.

Stay if….

You’re just tired of the work. There may be other departments you can transfer to, or a promotion you can try to get. The fact is, you’re going to get tired of your next job eventually. It’s up to you to keep things interesting at work.

You’re being sexually harassed. Don’t let sexual harassment run you out of a good job. Instead, take up the situation with supervisors or even legal authorities if necessary. Don’t succumb to harassment of this sort.

Remember, even if you do decide to leave your job, never quit in haste. Those big, exciting scenes where you stomp out the door are only for the movies. Instead, carefully plan your exit strategy. Always have another job in place before you quit.
